Terms and Conditions (Competitors)
Overview and Race
The 2026 edition of the Africa Wild Ultra™ will take place from Wednesday, the 20th May 2026 to Thursday, the 28th May 2026 in the Limpopo Province of South Africa. These dates include registration, transport to and the duration of the race. The race's home-base town is Hoedspruit.
Every year, the Africa Wild Ultra™ will be in May within the Kruger to Canyons Biosphere. The race will take place in the northern-most part of the Drakensburg Mountain range and Big5 bushveld in Limpopo, close to the Kruger National Park. It takes the form of a multi-staged, self-sufficient, ultra-marathon trail race over 257km.
Africa Wild Ultra™ is open to runners and walkers. Each competitor must be food self-sufficient, carry his/her own daypack with the daily emergency requirements, specific mandatory equipment, water, food, and any other necessary items.

Governing Rules
Africa Wild Ultra™ will be conducted in accordance with these Terms and Conditions. By registering, all competitors agree to adhere to, and be bound by, these Terms and Conditions.
Eligibility
Anyone 18 years of age or older (as of the date of the race) can enter. All competitors are required to complete the online Registration Form and include a brief biography of themselves. Additionally, competitors must email a medical certificate issued by a licensed physician confirming fitness for participation, accompanied by a resting ECG report to info@africawildultra.com.
Accommodation
- Africa Wild Ultra™ will provide accommodation in a hotel/lodge/tented camp on the registration evening before departure to the race (20th May 2026) with dinner and breakfast included.
- Africa Wild Ultra™ will provide accommodation and dinner (awards presentation) in a hotel/lodge/tented camp on the final evening of completion of the race (28th May 2026) with breakfast the next morning. Checkout will be on the 29th May 2026.
- Africa Wild Ultra™ is not responsible for the account of any alcoholic beverages (at any time), and any other additional beverage orders beyond those at set meals, unless authorised by the Race Director.
Ablution Rules
Please make use of the toilet facilities provided at campsites. When on the course, ablutions must be done at least 100m from a checkpoint, the course, or villages. All human waste must be buried at least 25cm below the surface. Toilet paper must be placed in a zip lock bag and carried to the next checkpoint or campsite for disposal in the bins provided.
Acknowledgement
The competitor acknowledges that they have read, understood and acknowledged, prior to purchasing their race entry and registering, all Terms and Conditions and all relevant information in order to make a qualified and informed decision to register and participate in the Africa Wild Ultra™.
Age Groupings
All competitors will be assigned to an age category based on their date of birth. The following age categories apply for both male and female competitors:
Application Information
- No late payments will be accepted.
- All payments should be made to Africa Wild Ultra™.
- For EFTs, any bank charges shall be at the competitors/payer's expense.
- Africa Wild Ultra™ reserves the right to refuse a competitor's application.
- In case of cancellation, competitors partially or fully registered on the current edition, may not be replaced by another individual.
Online Applications
- All registrations must be completed via the online registration process at www.africawildultra.com.
- There is a separate registration for South African citizens.
- This information must be submitted in full on or before registration closure on 20th March 2026.
- Registrations can only be confirmed once the medical form (available online from 01st October 2025) has been completed and emailed to registrations@africawildultra.com.
Campsites and Logistics
Competitors will overnight in designated campsites set up daily throughout the race. These camps offer basic amenities including numbered tents (generally accommodating 10 people), basic sanitation facilities, medical support, technical support, fires (in fire pits), and warm water access. Tent assignments will be determined by the Camp Manager before the race commences and remain fixed for the duration of the event. No tent swopping will be allowed.
Cancellations / Postponements
Registration Cancellation
Cancellations by competitors must be made in writing by email to: registrations@africawildultra.com.
Cancellation refunds will be made on the following basis:
- 10% retained: cancellation up to and including 30th September 2025
- 25% retained: cancellation between 1st October 2025 and 31st December 2025
- 50% retained: cancellation between 1st January 2026 and 20th March 2026
- Any cancellations after midnight (23:59 SAST) on 20th March 2026 will not be refunded
Postponement Policy (2026 to 2027)
- Up to 19th December 2025: reschedule to 2027 free of charge
- 20th December 2025 to 20th March 2026: rescheduling fee of 15% applies
- After 20th March 2026: Rescheduling not possible
All postponement requests must be submitted to registrations@africawildultra.com.
Complaints / Disputes
All complaints and disputes from competitors must be addressed to the Race Director or a Race Official verbally or in writing, to be resolved within 6 hours.
After the race, any complaints or disputes should be emailed to admin@africawildultra.com within 45 days of the race finish.
Course Markings
All competitors must follow the route as marked by the course team. For each stage, the course will be marked with retro reflective night markers.
In the case of a competitor losing their way they should:
- Stop immediately
- Retrace steps to the last course marker seen
- Continue to follow the markers
- If unable to locate the last marker, remain where they are, attempt to contact other competitors by shouting or with their whistles, failing which activate their distress remote
Data Protection
By registering, participants acknowledge and consent to the collection of their personal data through the registration platform.
Image Rights
By participating, competitors grant Africa Wild Ultra™ permission to use their image (photographs, videos, etc.), name, voice, and sporting performance indefinitely, for various purposes, including marketing and advertising.
To revoke permission, competitors must notify Africa Wild Ultra™ by email at registrations@africawildultra.com by 20th February 2026.
Dates
The 2026 edition of Africa Wild Ultra™ will take place between the 20th May 2026 to 28th May 2026, including registration and transport to the race start. All competitors are required to register on the afternoon/evening of the 20th May 2026.
Did Not Finish (DNF)
No competitor may leave the race without informing the Race Director or Operations Director and signing a Withdrawal Notice. A competitor that withdraws accepts that there will be no reimbursement of the race fee.
A team of more than 3 members may receive a 30-minute penalty if one member withdraws, provided the minimum of 3 team members remain. If less than 3 team members, the team can no longer compete and remaining members will be ranked individually.
Documentation
Mandatory documents to be emailed to registrations@africawildultra.com no later than 20th March 2026 (23:59 SAST):
- All information regarding competitor's identity, contact details, next of kin
- Photocopy of current valid passport (valid for at least 3 months after stay)
- South African competitors need to supply a copy of valid ID
- 1x colour identity document or passport photograph (3.5 cm x 4 cm)
- Original medical certificate with resting ECG report
- Confirmation of mandatory insurances for extreme sports
Entrants - Minimum
Africa Wild Ultra™ reserves the right to postpone the event, subject to a minimum number of entries being no less than fifty (50) competitors.
Entries
- Individual entries will be recorded for the individual overall ranking.
- A team must consist of at least 3 competitors. For a team to maintain its status, a minimum of 3 members must complete every stage.
Environmental Care
To protect the environment, littering is strictly prohibited. All waste must be disposed of in supplied waste bins.
Equipment, Clothing, Numbers
During physical registration on 20th May 2026, each competitor will receive:
- 1 x Race T-shirt
- 2 x race numbers (front chest and backpack, must be visible at all times)
- 8 x Africa Wild Ultra™ race patches (on sleeves of running shirts/jackets)
- A tracking remote with distress alert capability

Food and Nutrition
- Competitors are responsible for providing their own food during the race from 21st May through 28th May 2026
- During timed stages: minimum 800 k/calories of emergency rations required (except final stage)
- Minimum 2,000 k/calories of food available per day (excluding emergency rations)
- Food removed from packaging must have visible labels
Governing Law
These Terms and Conditions are governed by South African Law. All Terms and Conditions are written in English. Only the English text will prevail in the event of a dispute.
In the event of a dispute, contact Africa Wild Ultra™ via email at admin@africawildultra.com within forty-five (45) days after the event.
Indemnity
All competitors are to sign the Africa Wild Ultra™ Indemnity Agreement at registration. Failure to do so will prevent participation in the race.
Insurance
Participants must have the following valid insurance cover for extreme sports. Proof must be shown at registration:
Itinerary
Liability
Africa Wild Ultra™ shall be liable towards the competitor for proper performance of duties/services. However, they may be partly or fully relieved from liability if damage is attributable to the competitor or circumstances beyond their control.
Claims for liability have a limitation of 45 days post the final race-day.

Medical Care
A dedicated medical team will be present throughout the race. Doctors/paramedics will be stationed at every checkpoint and campsite.

All documents in original form must be presented at Race Registration on 20th May 2026. Failure will result in disqualification.
Misconduct and Penalties
Assistance
- Outside assistance forbidden unless authorized
- Providing food/drink: 3 hours or disqualification
- Using transportation: immediate disqualification
- Receiving extra water: 1st-30min, 2nd-1hr, 3rd-disqualification
Behaviour
- Inappropriate behaviour: immediate disqualification
- Mobile phones at campsite/checkpoints: 30-min penalty
- Littering/excessive noise: 30-min penalty
- Alcohol/drugs/illegal substances: immediate disqualification
Time & Food Checks
Missing time check: 1st-1hr, 2nd-2hrs, 3rd-disqualification
Unable to present minimum food requirements: 2-hour penalty
Participation
Race Handbook
A Race Handbook will be issued to each competitor at in-person registration with information on stages, checkpoints, terrain, timings, and checkpoint log.
Rankings
Individuals: Stage ranking = time taken (plus penalties). Overall = amassed times.
Teams: Stage ranking = average time of all members (plus penalties). Overall = amassed averages.
Registration: General
Registration is personal: cannot be used by another person. Fees do not include meals (unless stated), alcoholic beverages, or costs from abandoning the race.
In-person Registration
Registration checks: 15:00-22:00 on Wed 20th May 2026. All requirements must be signed off before 22:00. Late registrations: Thu 21st May 06:30-08:30.
Late Registration
Limited positions may be available between 20th March - 20th April 2026. Contact info@africawildultra.com.
Registration Refusal
Africa Wild Ultra™ reserves the right to refuse any applicant's registration.
Reserved Rights
Africa Wild Ultra™ reserves the right to modify: Terms and Conditions, course, timings, transfers, campsites, accommodation, place, date.
Search and Rescue
Ground and aerial search teams may be deployed if a competitor deviates from route or is unaccounted for.
Services
Africa Wild Ultra™ reserves the right to modify or cancel services due to weather, safety, or technical concerns. Unused services are non-refundable.
Sponsorship and Markings
Competitors may use clothing space for individual sponsors. Country patches on shirt sleeves at shoulder height, with Africa Wild Ultra™ patch immediately below.
Stage: Finishes
On finishing each stage, mandatory to have Race Handbook signed off, then proceed to water distribution point.
Stage: General
Competition: 6-7 stages. Checkpoints spaced 7-12km apart for check through, rest, water resupply. Mandatory to have Handbook signed off at each checkpoint.
Stage: Starts
All competitors begin together (Exception: Stage 1 all start together).
Staggered Start (Stages 2-7): Last 20% begin 45-60min ahead.
Mandatory Briefings: 30min before each stage start.

Teams
Competitors wishing to set up an official team must advise organisers 3 months prior (by 20th March 2026). Team name must be given at registration.
Terrain Conditions
Africa Wild Ultra™ is through remote areas, mountainous terrain, and dangerous game areas. Very testing.
Dangerous game areas monitored. Competitors escorted in pelotons of 8 by qualified Trail Guides. These sections not timed.
Third Party Agreements
Competitors must ensure no previous agreements infringe on third party rights. Competitors indemnify Africa Wild Ultra™ and are liable for any financial consequences.
Transportation
Transportation provided by bus, truck, or 4x4 after arrival in Hoedspruit until day after race. Africa Wild Ultra™ not liable for lost or damaged belongings.
Vaccinations
All competitors should be up to date on routine vaccinations for South Africa travel.
Hoedspruit: low to moderate malaria risk. Many take prophylaxis, especially Nov-April. Lowest risk June-Oct (race in May - moderate to low).
Precautions recommended: mosquito repellent, long-sleeved clothing, long trousers, socks at dawn/dusk.
Volunteers
Africa Wild Ultra™ will utilise volunteers. Apply separately. All details on website. Volunteers have same authority as race staff.
Waiting List
If 250 max reached, waiting list available on first-come-first-served basis.
Options: (1) If place available, first listed advised (complete within 72hrs), or (2) Priority entry into following year.
Water Supply
Africa Wild Ultra™ supplies water. Stations at each checkpoint where competitors refill containers.
End of each stage: five litres for overnight and next day first section. Competitors manage water use based on checkpoint locations.
